30 Days of Valentine’s Fun: Valentine’s Swirl Cookies

These Valentine’s cookies would be perfect for class parties or even just as a special treat for your own family.  My girls would absolutely LOVE to eat pink cookies.  Added bonus…they are also surprisingly easy to make.  Thanks to Jamie at Prudent Baby for the recipe!

Here’s what you need to make these cookies:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons brandy, or milk (I prefer milk, surprisingly enough)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Cooking With Kids Thursday: Homemade Bath Soap Crayons

Okay, this is one of those cooking with kids ideas that isn’t so much a recipe as it is a fun way to get the family in the kitchen, learning how to follow directions and measure ingredients.  Also, lets not forget the hours of fun your kids will have using these crayons in the bathtub later!  Thanks to Kiboomu! for this fun activity.

Here’s what you need to make these:

  • Clear glycerin soap base cut into cubes
  • 3 or more soap color dyes (or food color dyes)
  • Essential oils in your favorite smells (optional)
  • Glass measuring cup for melting soap
  • Spoons for mixing colors and fragrances
  • Ice cube trays or round crayon molds

30 Days of Valentine’s Fun: Heart Shaped Smore Pops

Who wouldn’t like to get a S’mores pop for a Valentine?  Yummy!  This would be a really cute gift for teachers.  You could make a little bouquet of them, arranged in a vase or cup, with a note from your child tied around it with a ribbon.  Thanks to Erin at In Between Laundry for this yummy gift idea!

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars

I had these at a party several years ago, but never did get the recipe.  They are super rich, but oh so very delicious!  I am so glad that I just happened across this recipe on pinterest. (Sorry to all those with peanut allergies.  I will do a peanut free recipe next time.)  Thanks to Greta White for the recipe!

Slow Cooker Monday: Black bean and chicken burritos

We used to love to eat at a place called Cafe Rio.  We haven’t found any place that compares since we moved, so I had to resort to trying to come up with my own recipe so we could somewhat get a Cafe Rio fix.  This recipe is so easy to make because it’s basically a “dump and go” recipe.

Black Bean & Chicken burritos (slow cooker)

Ingredients:
1 taco/fajita seasoning packet
2 cans black beans, drained
2-3 chicken breasts
1 can green enchilada sauce

Place chicken breasts in bottom of the crockpot and then add remaining ingredients. Cook on low 6-8 hours. Shred chicken before serving and serve in tortillas. We add cheese, sour cream, etc. to the tortillas. We sometimes add rice (cooked rice to the mixture once we’re ready to serve, not in the crockpot!). This is also really good if you use beef instead of the chicken!

I like to make Cilantro lime rice to serve with this.  If I’m feeling really ambitious, I sometimes make the Creamy Tomatillo dressing, too!
