Cooking With Kids Thursday: Mini Funnel Cakes

Funnel cakes are always a must any time I go to an amusement park.  I remember a few years back when my husband and I went to Disney World for the first time and I mentioned getting this delicious treat.  My husband just gave me a confused look.  Apparently he had never heard of them.  Consequently, I made a beeline to the nearest funnel cake stand and my husband has been converted ever since!

I am so excited that I can now have funnel cakes any time I want, in the comfort of my own home.  I also love that I can use any cookie cutter I want to make some really fun shapes.  Just think of the fun your kids will have picking their cookie cutter, squirting the batter into the pan and then putting all the toppings on the finished product.  Although, I advise that an adult be the one to do all the frying.  Grease burns can be pretty painful.  Thanks Bird on a Cake!

Here’s what you need to make these:

Dry Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
Wet Ingredients:
  • 1 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 egg

Toppings (optional):

  • whipped cream
  • fresh fruit
  • powdered sugar
  • jam
  • chocolate or strawberry syrup

Cooking With Kids Thursday: Homemade Goldfish

I am still in a bit of shock over this recipe.  My kids love eating Goldfish but they can get kind of pricey if you have to buy them often enough.  I find that a lot of “homemade” recipes for things online end up costing at ton to make once you buy all the ingrdients and are time intensive.  This is not one of those recipes.  These homemade goldfish only require 5 ingredients and I can guarantee you have them in your home.  This tutorial also includes how to make the fish shaped cookie cutters.  Thanks Tasty Kitchen!

Here’s what you need to make these:

  • 8 ounces, weight Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
  • 4 Tablespoons Butter, Cut Into Cubes
  • 1 cup Flour
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Cold Water

Cooking With Kids Thursday: Homemade Taffy!

This is a great family activity as you will need lots of arm power to twist and squeeze this taffy into shape!  I love the idea of letting the kids make their own batch with the color and flavor of their choice.  Thanks for the recipe Vanilla and Lace!

Here’s what you need to make this:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 T. Cornstarch
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 T. margarine/butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. Flavoring oil (I didn’t have flavoring oil so I used a tablespoon or more of Mint extract)
